Bioidentical Hormone Replacement Therapy (BHRT)
What is BHRT?
BHRT is an alternative to the more well known, hormone replacement therapy (HRT). BHRT and HRT are both synthetic hormones that can be taken orally or applied through creams and commonly used for symptoms of perimenopause, menopause, PCOS, PMS, PMDD and hypothyroidism.
Although also synthetic, BHRT uses hormones that are structurally identical to those made naturally within the body. In contrast, HRT hormones are structurally similar but not identical to the body’s natural hormones.
Many patients prefer the use of BHRT because of their improved safety profile compared to HRT.
The types of BHRT that naturopathic doctors can prescribe include:
Desiccated thyroid hormone
When is BHRT prescribed?
BHRT is used to correct an imbalance within the hormonal system. The first step to implementing BHRT is to test hormones and identify what the imbalance is. The DUTCH test, a dried urine hormone test, is used to identify baseline hormone levels and guide treatment and dosage.
BHRT is started at the lowest dose known to be effective and titrated up if needed based on symptoms. The goal of treatment is to balance the hormonal system in the body, not simply replace hormones that are low. Hormones are retested on a yearly basis to re-assess the safety and effectiveness of treatment.
Conditions where BHRT can be effective include:
